Today has taken off in Abu Dhabi (UAE) successfully the plane Solar Impulse 2, which will go around the world without fuel, powered only by solar energy.
This project is the result of thirteen years of research conducted by two Swiss pilots, Bertrand Picard and André Borschengberg, whose idea of flying just by solar energy caused initially the mockery of the aviation industry.
The plane is covered by more than 17000 solar cells which through a lithium battery, supply power to four electrical propeller engines. It can reach a maximum height of 8500 meters and a speed of between 50 and 140 km/h.
The journey will take about five months, of which 25 days will be of flight. In each of the twelve stopping places, the Solar Impulse team will organize meetings, visits to the plane or videoconferencing over the Internet to promote renewable energies.
Picard believes this is the proof to show the world that clean energy with cutting edge technology can help to achieve a sustainable environment if there is a firm commitment behind.
Where there is a will, there is a way. What do you think?
