Myths and facts about LED lighting. 1/3

We began a series of posts that will tell myths and realities about LEDs, especially for urban lighting. We leave the first 5.

General advantages

LED lighting consumes by 50 to 70% less energy than conventional lighting, saving energy, money and generating less greenhouse gases, making it greener.

It has an extended lifespan of over 50,000 hours, much higher than that of conventional luminaires.

It is available in a variety of color temperatures and high color rendering index that helps to better distinguish between colors, objects, people and vehicles overnight.

They offer high compatibility with management systems thanks to its technological design.

Myth 1: LED technology offers no confidence.

Fact: To dispel this myth, we must first understand the difference between LED diode and LED technology systems. The diodes were tested under laboratory conditions while systems include diodes, integrated circuits, electronic components, heat sinks and housings.

A poorly designed LED system can undergo accelerated depreciation bright and breaking his life, but a well-designed LED system provides many advantages in terms of light output, luminous efficiency and lifespan.

Myth 2: LED street lights are too expensive.

Fact: If you only evaluate the initial investment, it is clear that LED street lights are more expensive than a conventional lamps. However, in a lighting project, that we have to evaluate is the ROI (Payback), ie, how long it will take to recover the initial investment through savings that LED technology will provide. With this in mind, LED lamps are much cheaper than conventional due to its low power consumption and lower restocking fee.

Also, being embedded systems, it is not necessary to replace the lamps, reducing maintenance and installation costs.

Myth 3: LEDs do not generate heat.

Fact: LEDs do generate heat, but much less than a conventional luminaire as they transform most of the electricity consumed in visible light.

Myth 4: LED technology is still in its development stages.

Fact: LED was invented in 1963 and since then it has become the best solution to light thanks to its high efficiency and variety of applications. Clearly the great technologies are always in continuous development, but we can say that to fully consolidated by offering a wide range of luminaires with excellent results.

Myth 5: The diodes are fragile and have little resistance to vibration.

Fact: LEDs are ideal for use in outdoor lighting applications under extreme conditions thanks to its solid construction, without filaments.
