LED against energy poverty

Pobreza energética

Energy Poverty – Pobreza energética.

The International Energy Agency says that more than 1,300 million people suffer energy poverty in lighting because the places where they live or work have no access to electricity. In most cases, the solution of this problem is kerosene lamps and candles, to illuminate their homes and businesses.

This type of lighting sources kill 1.5 million people a year due to respiratory diseases and fires, as warns the World Health Organization.

The countries that suffer this kind of poverty are mostly from Africa, Asia and South America. To put numbers to this problem, the World Bank reported that, among other areas, only 1.5% people from southern Sudan has electricity access. This happens in many developing countries where hundreds of isolated communities do not have electricity networks due to geographic and financial constraints.

One LED flashlight uses zero solar energy and can light up a room with efficient light. Something as insignificant to us change the lives of many people.

On a larger scale, LED bulbs and photovoltaic solar panels can be combined to produce a sustainable lighting in public places getting living and working standards in communities to the time periods in which sunlight is no longer available. This would be a breakthrough for basic services such as health, but also in the business, sports and social context in general.
